Growing Civic and History Literacy
The St. Petersburg College Center for Civic Learning and Community Engagement (CCLCE) has announced the launch of two new academies, one for students and another for educators, aimed at growing civic and history literacy.
The first academy, opening in June 2025, offers professional development for teachers and staff. The second is for students. Called Becoming Titans in History and Civics, it begins during the 2025 Fall Term.
Both academies were made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the American History and Civics National Activities Program.
Professional Development for Educators
The grant supports a two-week, summer Teacher Academy for teachers and staff. This academy will provide valuable professional development opportunities for educators to promote civic and history literacy and engagement in their classrooms.
Innovative Curriculum for Students
CCLCE is developing a curriculum aimed at expanding civic and history literacy and engagement opportunities for students. The curriculum will be taught in a six-week academy at SPC's three Collegiate High Schools locations.
Future Goals
SPC is recognized nationally for building and fostering nonpartisan civic engagement. In 2024, the College was awarded the Highly Established Action Plan Seal by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
Looking ahead, SPC is working toward expanding these new academies and partnering with Pinellas County high schools to offer them to county students and educators. The College also aims to increase the number of civic engagement activities on a statewide level and enhance students’ and teachers’ understanding and involvement in history and civic affairs.
Check back in May 2025 for more updates about the academies and future program developments.
